Posted on September 25, 2019September 23, 2022 by Orna Farrell

We would like to invite you to our funded seminar about teaching online on the 23rd of January 2020.

Workshop details:

The aim of this workshop is to gain a greater understanding of effective online teaching practice and how to support the professional development of online teachers. Online learning is the fastest growing areas of education worldwide, in the U.S., a recent report by Babson Survey Research found that 32% of all American college students were studying at least one course online (Seaman, Allen, Seaman, 2018). However, teaching online requires different pedagogical approaches to traditional lecturing, therefore institutions need to support teachers transitioning into online teaching to ensure quality (Gurley, 2019; Mohr & Shelton, 2017). Effective online teaching supports student engagement and success, this is key as online students are more vulnerable to attrition (Coker, 2018; Woodley & Simpson 2014). This interactive workshop will explore three aspects of teaching online:

1. Effective online teaching practice

2. Professional development for those transitioning to teaching online

3. Professional development for experienced online teachers

Workshop activities will include the design by participants a professional development plan to support online teaching in their institutions.

Speakers include:

Dr Helen Corker- Queen Margaret University

Dr Elena Barbera – UoC Open University of Catalonia

#Openteach project team: Dr Orna Farrell, Dr James Brunton, Dr Eamon Costello, Caitriona Ní Shé

This event has been funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
